Floriography

Floriography is the language of flowers, many flowers have important symbolic meanings and the practice of assigning meanings to flowers is known as floriography. It is means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express their feelings which otherwise could not be spoken.

Flower works of artists and poets:

The art of flowers represents female genitalia, as seen in the works of artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Veronica Ruiz de Velasco, Imogen Cunningham, and Judy Chicago, and in fact in Asian and western classical art. Many cultures around the world have a marked tendency to associate flowers with femininity. The great variety of delicate and beautiful flowers has inspired the works of numerous poets and famous examples include William Blake's Ah! Sunflower, The Whild Flower’s Songs, My Pretty Rose Tree and William Wordsworth's I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.

Because of their diverse and colorful appearance, flowers have long been a favorite subject of visual artists as well. Some of the most renowned paintings from well-known painters are of flowers, such as Vincent Willem van Gogh's Vase with Twelve Sunflowers or Monet’s water lilies and Starry Night Over the Rhone that all intended to form the decorations for the Yellow House. Flowers are also dried; freeze dried and pressed in order to create permanent, three-dimensional pieces of floral art.

Myths of flowers:

The Roman goddess of flowers, gardens, and the season of Spring is Flora. Her festival, the Floralia, was held between April 28 and May 3 and symbolized the renewal of the cycle of life, drinking, and flowers. The Greek goddess of spring, flowers and nature is Chloris. Flora was married to Favonius, the wind god, and her companion was Hercules. Her name is derived from the Latin word "flos" which means "flower." In modern English, "Flora" also means the plants of a particular region or period. In Hindu mythology, flowers have a significant status and the Hindu tradition considers the lotus to have spiritual significance.

Examples of Floriography:

Some of the more common examples include: Red roses are given as a symbol of love, beauty, and passion. Lily is used in burials as a symbol referring to "resurrection/life". It is also associated with stars (sun) and its petals blooming/shining. Daisies are a symbol of innocence, Jasmine is symbol of grace and Marigold is symbol of Health, grief or despair. Violet is given a symbol of Loyalty, modesty and humility.
